EAGAN, MN – March 4, 2005 – In a move that reflects its evolution from a biomaterial science company to a drug development company, Biopolymer Engineering, Inc. announced today that effective immediately it would begin doing business as Biothera, the immune health company.
“The new name is a better fit for the company’s unique technology and focus on developing compounds that enhance the function of the immune system,” said Richard Mueller, President and Chief Executive Officer.
Biothera’s patented technologies enable the immune system to more effectively combat a wide range of diseases. The company is currently developing several immunotherapy drugs that work synergistically with monoclonal antibodies and vaccines to treat cancer. A secondary focus is the treatment of certain widespread infectious diseases, including Tuberculosis.
Biothera also has a rapidly growing Healthcare group that develops, manufactures and markets food-grade, immune-enhancing ingredients for the medical foods, nutritional supplements, functional foods, cosmetics and animal feeds and nutrition markets.
“We are a company focused on immune health,” said Daniel Conners, company Founder and Chairman of the Board. “Our entire technology platform is based on novel ways to enhance the function and performance of key immune cells, better enabling them to fight off a variety of challenges. As such, we believe that ‘Biothera’ better communicates who we are.”
The company was founded in 1997 to commercialize the development of certain natural complex carbohydrates. Since then the company has developed and acquired significant technology for carbohydrate compounds based on beta 1,3/1,6 glucan that prime key immune cells, including neutrophils, macrophages and natural killer cells.
The company will ratify the corporate name change at a future shareholder meeting.
