New Research Results to be Presented to the American
Association of Immunologists
Eagan, MN – March 29, 2005 – Research supporting the ability of WGP®
3-6 beta glucan to enhance the recovery of white blood cells
following bone marrow injury will be presented on April 5 at the
annual meeting of the American Association of Immunologists in San
Diego.
Cancer and stem cell researchers from the University of Louisville
have demonstrated that WGP 3-6 can speed production of critical
immune cells following bone marrow damage caused by radiation or
chemotherapy. Bone marrow injury and suppression of the immune
system is a common side effect of these cancer therapies.
“Preclinical research shows that WGP has promise as a treatment that
will help cancer patients undergoing radio or chemotherapy,” said
Jun Yan, M.D., Ph.D., a researcher at the James Brown Cancer Center,
University of Louisville. “In vivo studies showed that WGP
accelerated the recovery of leukocytes following irradiation.”
WGP 3-6 is a food-grade product of Biothera, the immune health
company. Biothera manufactures and sells WGP 3-6 as an ingredient in
dietary supplements, functional foods, cosmetics and animal
nutrition.
Dr. Daniel Cramer from Dr. Yan’s lab will present the findings in a
presentation entitled, “Beta Glucan Enhancement of
Complement-Mediated Hematopoietic Recovery after Bone Marrow
Injury.” The research was supported by grants from the National
Cancer Institute, Department of Defense, Kentucky Lung Cancer
Research Program, and research gift funds from Biothera.
