the Japanese Society for Complementary and Alternative Medicine
EAGAN, MN – October 21, 2004 – Biopolymer Engineering, Inc. Vice
President of Research & Development Brian Brandley, Ph.D. will
present recently published cancer research on October 30 at the
Japanese Society for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in
Kanabawa.
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widely accepted in
Japan. According to a 2002 survey of 1,000 Japanese respondents, 66
percent of adults used at least one CAM therapy in the past 12
months. In comparison, 42 percent of U.S. adults turned to a CAM
therapy during the same period. The most popular CAM in Japan was
dietary supplements (42 percent).
Dr. Brandley will present data on Biopolymer Engineering’s
yeast-based beta glucans, which preclinical studies have
demonstrated enhanced the effectiveness of cancer monoclonal
antibodies and vaccines. The company’s research also shows that the
beta 1,3/1,6 molecular structure of the yeast beta glucan is more
potent than mushroom glucan products.
Biopolymer Engineering markets its WGPâ
3-6 and BetaRightâ
3-6 beta glucans as ingredients in dietary supplements and
functional foods in Japan. The company’s marketing and distribution
partner in Japan is Nihon SiberHegner K.K., which is part of DKSH, a
Zürich-based marketing and sales organization.
In addition, Dr. Brandley will participate as a panelist in an
international symposium entitled, "Functional Food: Its Present and
Future Situation Worldwide.” He will discuss on functional food
trends in the U.S.
